Spa Manager Extraordinaire!

Have you met Toula, Aetheria Spa's spa manager extraordinaire?

Toula joined our team as our spa manager over two years ago when she was about to graduate from UCONN with a degree in psychology. The following September, she started the Clinical Massage Therapy program at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy in Westport (where most of our therapists have graduated from, including myself). We call it CCMT, and it is one of the best schools in the country for massage therapy education.


Two weeks ago, she graduated.


She's wanted to be a massage therapist since she was a teenager. Look at how she's beaming at the ceremony as she receives her diploma! We are all so proud of her, especially me, the Mother Hen of Aetheria.


We threw her a small graduation party at the spa last week. What kind of music did the crew choose for the festivities? Polka. Yeah, that's how we roll. We're a crazy bunch.

Alissa, one of our lead therapists, developed some hysterical Mad Libs about spa life. And Toula was "tested" on her knowledge of the profession in which she's about to enter into. When she answered correctly, she won prizes of candles, peaceful music, and all the other supplies a therapist needs to perform their work. (She passed with flying colors of course).

Earlier this week, she took the Connecticut State Licensure Exam and passed with high marks. This is the final step in the process before she's able to practice massage therapy professionally. Now it's just a waiting game until the state processes the paperwork and issues her a license number (likely to take a few weeks).

Toula has certainly worked on the public before through the school's clinic program, but this offer is designed to encourage our clientele to try her talents, and give her helpful feedback and experience she needs to advance her skills beyond the sheltered cocoon of school. Working at a spa offers the opportunity to gain experience on all kinds of body types, all kinds of issues, and all kinds of muscle structures. It's like a "residency program" that doctors do once they graduate.

Not only does Toula have "the gift" that I look for when I hire therapists, she's had a significant advantage over her classmates by practicing on the staff here and learning tricks, techniques, and nuances of massage that only professionals working in the field could impart to a student.
