Life In a Day

I recently had a conversation with one of my friends about how it has been claimed that Facebook (and social media) is contributing to people's depression. In theory, people have access to more personal information about others lives and, in comparison to their own, it seems our lives are less exciting. We wake up, get dressed, go to work, come home, eat something uninspiring, eventually go to sleep, and the cycle begins again. Boring, right? Yet, when we log into Facebook to "catch up" with our friends, we see happy pictures of a trip from which they've just returned, or their status updates reflect a joy about life that we just don't feel inside about our own.

This conversation was rolling around in my head last night when I selected "Life In a Day" from my Netflix instant queue. I spent the next 90 minutes fascinated and inspired, ultimately feeling that as long as the sun rises, life is really, really good! There is tremendous beauty in the mundane.

Life In a Day is a historic film capturing for future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. 4500 hours of film were captured in 192 different countries around the world, all filmed by people like you and me. It was a brilliant piece of filmmaking.
