A favorite indulgence for many is chocolate and when it comes down to our health, dark chocolate always comes out the winner. While it’s easy for us to reach for the Hershey kisses or color coated M&M’s, high quality dark chocolate is superior in taste and nutrition. It is high in antioxidants helping us to take care of free radicals circulating in the body. Too many of these destructive molecules may lead to accelerated aging and even disease. Other possible benefits of dark chocolate include: lowering blood pressure; elevating one’s mood; creating a relaxation response by increasing theta brain waves; and raising serotonin levels to produce a state of well-being. Binging on chocolate is never a good idea but having a small piece on occasion and savoring each and every bite may lift your spirits and your health!
Wine may also help to lower blood pressure and more importantly, studies show that red wine is especially beneficial to the heart. Just like dark chocolate, organic wines are highest in antioxidants. In addition they contain lower amounts of sulfites and no harmful pesticides are used during processing. Fans of organic wine claim that the flavors are more vibrant than their non-organic counterparts. Resveratrol, found in grape skins and seeds, is a terrific anti-aging agent and has also been shown to increase good cholesterol (HDL) and prevent cancer. Drinking wine with a nice dinner may help the body to relax and unwind after a long day but remember it’s best for your overall health if consumed in moderation.
This Valentine’s Day, treat your sweetheart or girlfriends to these scrumptious dark chocolate covered strawberries. Be sure to pair them with your favorite red wine for the ultimate antioxidant experience!

Ingredients:
Organic strawberries
Organic Dark Chocolate
Directions:
Wash and fully dry the strawberries. Melt the chocolate in a double broiler, stirring frequently. Dip each strawberry in the dark chocolate by holding at the stem and quickly twisting to shake off any excess. Place each coated strawberry immediately onto a piece of wax paper to dry. To speed up the drying process, put a tray of the chocolate covered strawberries into the freezer for approximately 4 minutes. They are best served on the same day they are prepared. Enjoy!
