What is Your Skin Type?
Feeling a little bit confused about which products are best for your skin? Elizabeth, Aetheria's lead esthetician, offers a simple guide to help sort the confusion.
Dry Skin
The natural oil secretions in our hair follicles help protect us from environmental damage and aging, but dry skin needs extra care because it lacks this normal protection. The facial pores are usually small and sebum, a natural lubricant our bodies produce to protect the skin, is minimal. Stimulating oil production and protecting the surface is imperative to taking care of dry skin.
Normal Skin
Normal skin has a good balance of oil production and hydration. It can fluctuate slightly between dry and oily, depending on seasonal changes, environmental and lifestyle factors, but essentially the pores are of a normal size and clear of blemishes. Maintenance and preventative care is good for normal skin types.
Combination Skin
Combination skin can be both oily and dry at the same time. Does your skin tend to have larger pores and be more oily on the forehead, nose and chin area? While the cheek area seems dry and even appear flaky? Combination skin types require more care than normal skin types. Consider establishing a schedule of maintenance facials and regular exfoliation in your home care routine.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by excess sebum or oil production. The pores are larger than normal skin types, and due to the build up of oil and dead-skin cells, is more prone to blemishes. Balancing the oil production through treatment and products is the best course of action for this skin type. Over cleansing can irritate the skin and compound problems. Speak to an experienced esthetician to establish an effective home care routine.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive Skin is characterized by redness and is easily irritated by products and exposure to heat or sun. This skin type needs to be treated very gently with non-irritating products. Again, it would be best to speak with an experienced esthetician to establish an effective home care routine.
