Spazzled? Bearing it All

Debbie asks,
" Do I have to get fully undressed for a massage?"

Many people find the thought of being naked on a massage table as pretty awkward. Don't worry; you are not alone in your modesty.

While you are welcome to keep your undergarments on if it makes you feel more comfortable, it is helpful to the therapist working with you to remove your brassiere at least.

A talented and licensed massage therapist is very careful to observe your personal boundaries during treatment. You will be covered by a sheet and blanket at all times during the session. The therapist only exposes the area of the body that they are working on at the time: the back, down to the sacral area near the base of your spine, and your legs up to mid-thigh when lying face-down. When you are lying face-up, the therapist will expose each limb as they work, being careful to keep the chest and private areas securely covered at all times.

You should always feel safe and secure when you receive any kind of spa treatment. If you feel uncomfortable by the draping of the blanket, or by the actions of a therapist, you should communicate it to your therapist. If you feel that a therapist isn't respecting your personal boundaries, you have the right to stop the session. (Similarly, if a therapist feels that a client isn't respecting personal boundaries, they have the right to stop the session as well).

Remember, it is supposed to be a relaxing and healing session for you. Don't hesitate to speak up if you find yourself in a situation where those goals aren't being addressed.
