Spa-zzled? Should I Eat Before or After my Spa Treatment?

You should definitely try to eat something before your spa treatment.

Most of our culture exists in a constant state of "flight or fight" mode. This is an instinctual part of our body's nervous system known as the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Any changes that occur in your environment trips the secretion of adrenaline to prepare our muscles for the potential need to run away or fight the perceived enemy. In layman's terms: We are constantly under stress and in some level of panic mode.

Anytime you lie down or find solace in a quiet spot with no interruptions, the parasympathetic nervous system gets activated. This is "rest and digest" mode. Your body's energy gets diverted to the digestive system and has the opportunity to actually do its job, extracting nutrients that the body needs to survive. This is why your stomach probably growled so loudly the last time you had a massage and hadn't eaten beforehand. It was a missed opportunity! Your body only received half the benefits of the treatment (rest)!

Next time you visit for a relaxing spa treatment, be sure to snack on some healthful fruit or granola before you go. Your body will thank you for it!
