Healthy Bite: Tips for Preventing Breast Cancer

A Nutritional Approach to Breast Cancer Prevention

October is national breast cancer awareness month. With approximately 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. and an estimated 192,370 new cases of breast cancer expected to be diagnosed this year (American Cancer Society), let’s take care of our bodies and use this simple nutritional prevention checklist to stay healthy.

Nutritional Cancer Prevention Checklist:

* Hormone-Free! Eat a healthy diet that primarily includes organic, hormone-free ingredients.

* Rainbow Shopping: Every time you go grocery shopping, make sure that your cart is a rainbow of veggies and fruits.

* Real Food. Reduce your weight by eating whole foods. Focus less on the boxes and packaged food items.

* Take antioxidants: They can be found in the form of fruits, vegetables, supplements. Acai is a great antioxidant as long as it is harvest properly. Most on the market have either been stripped of nutrients through the bottling process or are highly diluted.

* Make A Date With Yourself: Get a consistent work out routine and stick to it.

* Sweat It Out: Detoxify your body by building up a sweat when you’re working out. You’ll also build up strength and endurance by doing so. It’s a win-win!

* Switch to Aluminum Free Deodorant: The skin area surrounding the breast and armpit is very thin so toxins can easily seep in. Find a product that works with your body chemistry and keeps you feeling clean and refreshed all day long.

* Switch to Clean Cosmetics: Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens have been linked to breast cancer.

* Change your self-limiting thoughts: Void yourself of any fear based thoughts. Remember, life supports you! Turn those negative thoughts into positive, self-supporting ones. Two techniques that I successfully utilize in my nutrition practice are EFT and Psych-K

* Maintain a proper pH. Test your pH regularly using pH strips. If you're too acidic, try adding a green drink to your regular routine.

* Limit Your Alcohol: Studies suggest that it's best for men to drink no more than two alcoholic beverages per day and women no more than one.

* Let the Sunlight In: Recent research shows us that Vitamin D levels are important for many types of cancer prevention. Get your levels checked and supplement during the winter months (and for many, summer months too). Consider avoiding sunblock when you're outside for just 15 minutes at a time.

Lastly, remember to nourish your body everyday through food, relationships, career and spirituality!
