Small children have a wonderful facility to enjoying the moment, because they are free of the heavy burden of the past and have not yet learned to fear the future. As adults we are so conditioned to think of a hundred things at once that we often find it difficult to break free and just "be" in the here and now. Being acutely aware of the present by keeping the mind fully absorbed in the task you are performing is called being mindful. Mindfulness is a technique that can be learned, although it takes practice to stop your attention from wandering. Next time you have to perform an unwelcome task (such as loading the dishwasher), instead of daydreaming, concentrate fully of the job at hand. When you become fully involved in the moments, even the most mundane tasks can focus your mind helping you to feel calm and centered.
